Rock for Recovery with Right Turn’s 8th Annual Super Group Concert!

For the past ten years, Woody Geissman, founder and CEO of Right Turn Addiction Services, has been helping people devastated by drug and alcohol addiction get their lives back on track and on the road to recovery at the Arlington-based center. But Sunday night at the Royale Boston, the former drummer for the 80’s Boston band The Del Fuegos will be indulging his other passion as one of the drummers (along with former Bad Company drummer and pal Simon Kirke) powering the Super Group assembled for Right Turn’s 8th annual fundraising event. Geissman says the purpose of the show is not only to raise funds for his innovative treatment programs, but just as importantly, to help elevate awareness of  addiction recovery in general.

“The Super Group event is very important to us because it sends a very strong message about recovery…that recovery is not a boring place,” says Geissman. “There’s a whole stigma around addiction and we want people to know that you can have fun in recovery.”

Local comedy legend Steve Sweeney will host the show, and headliners include three Grammy winners in Joan Osbourne, Paula Cole and New Orleans’ Trombone Shorty, as well as Evan Dando of the Lemonheads. Each will perform a short set backed by the Right Turn Super Group that features G.E. Smith (Saturday Night Live) and Barry Goudreau (formerly of Boston) on guitar, David Hull (Joe Perry Project) on bass, vocalists Chris Trapper of the Push Stars, blues great James Montgomery and Shea Rose (multiple Boston Music Awards winner), New Orleans’ Glenn David Andrews on trombone and vocals, plus Marty Richards, Sandy MacDonald and other guests.

Right Turn recently celebrated ten years of operation, and two years ago opened a small (7 bed) residential treatment center for men. Geissman says his goal moving forward is to expand treatment services overall, but especially for women “who are much underserved for substance abuse issues” and for whom he hopes to establish a residential treatment center for as well.

In addition to a night of musical performances, there will also be an auction of Rock n Roll themed items, including a guitar signed by the Super Group and another autographed by the Del Fuegos. But the coolest item to be auctioned off would undoubtedly be a round of golf with Alice Cooper (who headlined the fundraiser a few years ago). “He said he didn’t want any beginners though,” jokes Geissman. “He said, ‘send me a good golfer’.”

All of the proceeds from the Super Group show will benefit Right Turn – A Creative Place for Recovery, which offers services to people struggling with addiction and mental health issues in an innovative and creative manner. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $100 for the VIP and Meet & Greet, which is catered by Jasper White – Summer Shack at 5:30pm, Show starts at 7pm at Royale Boston, 279 Tremont St., Boston, MA 02116.
