Johnny’s List of Quirky Boston Events: 02/10/06

The event of the week is
Les Miserables, Feb 15-26, at the Opera House.
Also next week is the
Ice Sculpting & Merrimack River Eagle Festival, Feb 15-18. Here’s the scoop. It’s in Amesbury. You can take ice sculpture lessons 2/15 & 2/16 @ 5:30. And then the entries are judged 2/17 at 5:30. But basically, you want to show up Feb 18th because they’ll be showing the ice sculptures then and the Eagle Festival will be in full swing. Basically it’s eagle tours & demos and events. 978-388-3178.

Every year the students at Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theater Club give out awards to the
Hasty Pudding “Man and Woman of the Year”, Feb 16 & Feb 24. Typically they are famous actors who are drawn in by Harvard’s allure, without realizing that Harvard doesn’t have a theater department and after all, they are only college kids, no matter what school they go to. They do a “roast” one for the man — this year it’s Richard Gere, and for the woman, this year it’s Halle Berry. So you get to dress up and attend a big dinner, basically. Buy tickets in advance, like now.
Playing at MIT are
The Vagina Monologues, Feb 16-18 @ 8pm. It’s fine but I know there are other women-power shows out there. Now that it’s a decade old, maybe colleges should give this one a rest and perform some other works.
Not much is happening outside of theater because it’s so cold out. So yet another show to recommend,
Othello, Feb 16-Mar 11, at the BCA Plaza Theatre, 539 Tremont St, Boston. 617-933-8600. Shakespeare’s classic work.

Also, Tuesday is Valentine’s Day.
